Starfish Kids

It Makes A Difference to One.

Many children in Liberia live in abject poverty due to losing one or both parents. Their single parent or other caregiver struggles to provide for their daily needs, which often makes the cost of quality education out of reach. Because they work very hard to find enough food for the family, oftentimes, there are not enough resources to pay school fees or to buy uniforms.

The Starfish Kids scholarship program assists promising, dedicated, and impoverished children by giving them the opportunity for a quality Christian education. By educating and mentoring Liberian youth, we not only prepare them for better jobs, but we will train them to live out the example of Jesus in their communities.  Each story is unique. Each child is precious.

FAQs

  • Every month a transfer is sent to Liberia with a distribution form that lists how the money will be used. For Starfish Kids, we make tuition payments 1st and 2nd semester. We receive receipts from all the schools. For our rice distribution, photos of the families with their rice are sent monthly with a report. A report is sent monthly recording the medical expenses of the students with the receipt from the clinic or pharmacy.

  • We receive many requests for new students to be added to our scholarship program. When we are able to add new students, we have a committee of 3-4 staff members in Liberia that interview new student caregivers. Our committee interviews the students. It is often a really difficult decision, but our committee generally selects just one student from a family. They gave preference to orphans over students with parents. And, they often selected more girls than boys since girls are often overlooked for education.

  • All donations to Starfish Kids are used for the Starfish Kids program. Most of it is used directly for the tuition of our sponsored students. Not all our students currently have sponsors, so if there is extra money for one student, we use it for another student. Each school has its own tuition rate and the amount varies from grade to grade. To keep it simple, we average the tuition of all the students together. The program includes tuition, medical care for students when they get sick, food support (rice) for families that are really in need, school supplies, and the salary of the Starfish Coordinator in Liberia.
